Spotlight 6: Women are still paid less than men: how do we change this?

The HR Think Tank held a seminar recently, addressing gender inequality in the workplace.
The aim was to understand how to better tackle the lack of women in leadership positions,
sexual harassment in the workplace, and the gender pay gap.
On the Global Gender Gap Index, South Africa achieves its worst rank for ‘economic participation and opportunity’, at 89th out of 144 countries, down from 79th in 2006. Since the last index, the country has experienced a rise in the share of female legislators, officials and managers, but its gender pay gap has widened.
This paper explores some of the primary issues around why women still have lower earnings than men, often even in cases where they do the same work.
